EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in time as Prince Albert lays the foundation stone for the new wing of the Licenced Victuallers' Asylum in 1858. The ceremony took place at the well-known institution located in the Old Kent-road, London. The Licenced Victuallers' Asylum was not only the first of its kind but also the largest trade asylum in the country, providing shelter and support for those in need from the licenced victualling trade. The architect, Mr. C.B. Arding, proudly presented the plans for the proposed buildings to Prince Albert, who showed great interest in the design of the new wing, later to be known as the 'Albert Wing.' The stone, carefully prepared for the occasion, was lowered and tried before being placed by the Prince, securing it in its permanent position. The Reverend W.G. Martin, MA, the chaplain of the institution, led the ceremony with an appropriate prayer, and the children of the school sang the National Anthem to conclude the event. The Illustrated London News reported on this momentous occasion, capturing the essence of the day and preserving it for future generations. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the significance of the Licenced Victuallers' Asylum and the role of Prince Albert in its development.
