EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century oil painting depicts St James the Greater, also known as St James the Apostle or St James the Great. The exact origins of this artwork are unknown, but it is believed to date back to the 17th century. St James, a disciple of Jesus Christ and one of the twelve apostles, is shown in this portrait with a hand on his chest or heart, a common gesture of devotion and piety in religious art. He is dressed in the robes of a pilgrim, signifying his role as the patron saint of pilgrims and travelers. St James is depicted looking up, possibly in reverence or in anticipation of his martyrdom. The painting is executed in oil on canvas and is currently housed in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. St James is often depicted with a sword or a pilgrim's staff, and is also associated with the Moor or Saracen, as the legend of St James the Moor or Santiago Matamoros tells of his victory over the Moors in Spain. This painting is a testament to the rich artistic and religious heritage of the 17th century, and continues to captivate viewers with its intriguing symbolism and beautiful color palette.
