EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment from the 1845 London stage production at St. James's Theatre, featuring amateur actors in two plays: Ben Jonson's "Every Man in his Humour" and the farce "A Good Night's Rest", an adaptation of "Passe Minuit". In this particular scene, we see British writer John Foster portraying the character Kitely with great intelligence and skill. Despite being reminiscent of Macready's style, Mr. Foster impressively conveys Kitely's passing suspicions and quick-coming doubts as a jealous husband. The image showcases the essence of 19th-century theatre, with its elaborate costumes and dramatic poses. The engraving beautifully captures every detail of Foster's portrayal, highlighting his full-length presence on stage. As an author connected to the esteemed "Examiner" newspaper and known for his work titled "The Lives of Eminent Statesmen". Mr. Foster brings both literary prowess and acting talent to this performance. This print is a testament to the vibrant entertainment industry during that era, where amateurs shared stages with professional performers like Foster. It serves as a reminder of how theatre played a significant role in Victorian society by providing both artistic expression and popular amusement. Preserved by Heritage Images, this historical snapshot offers us a glimpse into the world of 19th-century British theatre while celebrating John Foster's remarkable portrayal as Kitely on that memorable night at St. James’s Theatre.
