EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white glass negative image, captured in the late 19th century, depicts the U.S.S. New York's apprentice boat crew in commemoration of the anniversary of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1899. The U.S.S. New York was a cruiser in the United States Navy that saw action during the Spanish-American War. The crew, dressed in their uniforms and gathered on the deck, appear focused and determined as they prepare for a regatta or racing event. The men, of various races, represent the diverse makeup of the naval force during this period. The U.S.S. New York was a formidable battleship, and its crew played a significant role in the naval warfare that marked the end of the Spanish-American War. This historic photograph, from the Library of Congress, offers a unique glimpse into the daily life of the sailors and their occupation on board the ship. The glass negative, created by an unknown photographer, measures 8 x 10 inches and is a testament to the rich maritime history of the United States.
