EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the masterpiece "Adoration Magi" painted around 1465 by Justus of Ghent, also known as Joos van Wassenhove. Created using distemper on canvas, this artwork measures 43 x 63 inches (1092 x 160 cm) and is now part of the Liszt Collection. The painting depicts a significant biblical scene - the Adoration of the Magi. Justus of Ghent skillfully portrays this momentous event with his meticulous brushwork and attention to detail. The composition is thoughtfully arranged, with parallel and diagonal lines guiding our gaze towards the main figures in the foreground. Inspired by contemporary plays that reenacted religious stories, Justus captures the essence of this epiphany tale through his artistic interpretation. The stage-like space adds depth to the narrative, immersing viewers in a rich visual experience. Notably, this particular work was commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino in Italy in 1469. It stands as one of only two surviving paintings attributed to Justus' time spent in Italy before his death around 1480. As we admire this print from Artokoloro's collection, we are transported back to an era where art served not only as decoration but also as a medium for storytelling and spiritual reflection.
