EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Hercules overcomes the Hydra of Lerna" we witness a momentous battle between the legendary hero and a fearsome multi-headed monster. The artwork, created by Cornelis Cort and Julius Goltzius in or after 1563 but before c. 1595, beautifully captures the intensity of this mythological encounter. As Hercules valiantly confronts the Hydra, his trusted cousin Iolaus stands by his side, ready to lend a helping hand. However, their efforts are hindered by an unexpected adversary - a crab that nips at Hercules' foot. Undeterred, our hero wields his mighty club and strikes at each menacing head of the monstrous creature. The scene is filled with action as Hercules sears through necks while new heads grow in their place. Amidst this epic struggle, it becomes evident that every victory comes at great cost; for even as he battles against overwhelming odds, Hercules finds himself bitten on the foot by one of the relentless crabs. Juno's watchful gaze reminds us that these heroic duties are not without divine intervention. As we delve into Quint Lox's interpretation of this timeless tale from Greek mythology through photography, we are transported to Lerna where courage meets adversity and triumph emerges from chaos
