EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving showcases three fascinating reptiles: the Armadillo Girdled Lizard (Cordylus cataphractus), the Rough-tail Rock Agama (Laudakia stellio), and the Hippolyte's Agama or Cloquet's Agama (Laudakia hippocrepis). The image, taken from the esteemed Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles published between 1816 and 1830, was illustrated by the skilled natural history painter Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845). Pretre began his career as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Armadillo Girdled Lizard, also known as the Armadillo Skink, is native to South Africa and is characterized by its unique armor-like scales. The Rough-tail Rock Agama, found in North Africa, is known for its bright colors and the distinctive rough texture of its tail. The Hippolyte's Agama, native to Madagascar, is named after the Greek god Hippolyte and features vibrant colors and a fan-like crest. This illustration offers a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century, showcasing the intricate details and beauty of these remarkable reptiles. The use of the stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
