EDITORS COMMENTS
Playful Kittens! A Delightful Depiction of The Church and Stage Guild, 1880s: Breaking Down Prejudice Between Clergy and Performers This charming and whimsical cartoon, titled "Playful Kittens!" depicts a pivotal moment in the history of The Church and Stage Guild. Established in May 1879, the Guild aimed to bridge the gap between the clergy and the theatrical world, working to dismantle the prevalent prejudice against theatre and its performers. At the heart of this image stands Stewart Headlam (1847-1924), the founder of the Guild. Surrounded by an array of clergymen and women, as well as actresses and actors, Headlam skillfully brings together two seemingly disparate worlds. The clergymen, dressed in their formal attire, engage in a lighthearted moment with the actresses, who are playfully posing with kittens. By the time this cartoon was published in 1880, The Church and Stage Guild had amassed nearly 500 members from both the clergy and the theatrical world. This inclusive and groundbreaking organization, led by Headlam, a Christian Socialist, paved the way for a more accepting and open society, where the arts and spirituality could coexist harmoniously. The cartoon serves as a testament to the power of unity and understanding, demonstrating that even the most unlikely alliances can lead to profound societal change. This delightful image, created by an unknown artist, offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the transformative potential of open-mindedness and acceptance.
