EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Edward VIII, the former King of the United Kingdom (1894-1972), is depicted in his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Guards Regiments, taken in May 1936, shortly after his accession to the throne. At the time, Edward assumed various military ranks, including Admiral of the Fleet, Field-Marshal, and Marshal of the Royal Air Force, setting a precedent for future monarchs. The image captures Edward VIII wearing the full Scottish uniform of the regiment, complete with a kilt, which adds to the grandeur and tradition of the British monarchy. The King's decision to become Colonel-in-Chief of several other regiments, including the Life Guards, the Royal Artillery, and the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, further solidified his connection to the military. However, the King's reign was short-lived. In December 1936, just one year after his accession, Edward chose to abdicate the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American woman who had been divorced twice. His decision to marry a divorced woman against the wishes of the Church and the British people led to his abdication, and he was succeeded by his brother, George VI. Edward VIII became known as the Duke of Windsor and lived out the rest of his life in exile. This photograph is a testament to Edward VIII's brief but significant reign as King of the United Kingdom and his strong connection to the military, particularly the Guards Regiments. The image is a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in British monarchy history.
