EDITORS COMMENTS
This cigar card image transports us back to the golden age of seafaring, featuring the legendary ship, the Golden Hind, under the command of the intrepid English explorer, Sir Francis Drake. Once known as the Pelican, the ship gained its iconic name during Drake's circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580. Sir Francis Drake, a renowned sailor, privateer, and explorer, embarked on this historic voyage with three ships: the Golden Hind, the Swallow, and the Bishop's Falcon. The Golden Hind, a galleon with an estimated length of 106 feet and a beam of 28 feet, was the largest and most notable of the three. Drake's circumnavigation was an unprecedented achievement, making him the first Englishman to sail around the world. The journey was fraught with danger, as the crew faced numerous challenges, including storms, piracy, and scurvy. Despite these hardships, they successfully completed their mission, returning to England in 1580 with a cargo of valuable spices, gold, and silver. This cigar card image, produced by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the Golden Hind in all its glory. The intricate details of the ship's sails, rigging, and cannons are beautifully rendered, providing a captivating window into the world of 16th-century seafaring. This historical artifact serves as a reminder of the courage, determination, and ingenuity of Sir Francis Drake and his crew, who dared to venture into the unknown and leave their mark on history.
