EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning title page is from the first edition of Pliny the Elder's seminal work, Historia Naturalis, or Natural History, published in Venice in 1469. Measuring 400mm by 270mm, this incunabulum (a book printed before 1501) is a treasure of early printed literature and a testament to the enduring fascination with the natural world during the Renaissance. Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79), a Roman philosopher, naturalist, and historian, wrote Historia Naturalis as a comprehensive encyclopedia of the natural world, covering a vast range of topics from geography and geology to zoology and botany. This title page, illuminated with intricate watercolor and gold paint, reflects the grandeur and importance of the work. The central image depicts the goddess Natura, or Nature, holding a cornucopia and surrounded by various animals and plants. The Latin inscription above reads "Historia Naturalis," while the Latin and Italian texts below list the contents of the work. The publication of Historia Naturalis marked a significant milestone in the history of natural history and the development of the art of ornithology. This title page, with its exquisite illustrations and intricate design, is a beautiful reminder of the beauty and wonder of the natural world that Pliny sought to capture in his groundbreaking work.
