EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning inlaid marble panel, captured here from the hallowed halls of Siena's Duomo (Cathedral) in Italy, dates back to the 1910s and tells the tragic story of Absalom, the third son of King David from the Old Testament of the Bible. The intricately designed panel depicts the moment of Absalom's death during the Battle of Ephraim Wood. Absalom, with his long flowing hair caught in the branches of a tree, is shown being killed by Joab, the commander of David's army, who speared him in the heart. The panel's inlaid marble technique masterfully brings the scene to life, with the detailed depiction of the forest, the spears, and the expressions of anguish and determination on the faces of the characters. Absalom's lifeless body, with his head thrown back and his eyes closed, lies at the base of the tree, surrounded by the chaos of battle. The panel's intricate design and historical significance make it a must-see for visitors to Siena's Duomo, a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Italy's past.
