EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Johann Schmid (circa 1600), a prominent German churchman and theologian of the late Renaissance period. Schmid's stern yet thoughtful expression conveys the deep intellectual and spiritual contemplation that characterized the Reformation era. Born in the small town of Würzburg in present-day Bavaria, Schmid was educated at the University of Würzburg before embarking on a distinguished career in the Lutheran Church. He served as a pastor in various parishes and held important positions within the Lutheran hierarchy, including dean of the theological faculty at the University of Altdorf. Schmid was known for his rigorous scholarship and his commitment to theological orthodoxy. He authored numerous works on various aspects of Lutheran doctrine, including a comprehensive commentary on the Book of Revelation. Schmid's theological views were deeply influenced by the thought of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, and he played a significant role in the development of Lutheran orthodoxy in the late 16th century. Despite his scholarly pursuits, Schmid remained deeply committed to the pastoral care of his flock. He believed that theology and practice were inseparable, and he devoted much energy to the education and training of pastors and other church leaders. Schmid's legacy as a theologian and churchman continues to be felt in the Lutheran tradition to this day. This hauntingly beautiful print captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to the study and practice of the Christian faith, and who left an indelible mark on the intellectual and spiritual landscape of the Reformation era.
