EDITORS COMMENTS
Lord Dundreary, the notorious English aristocrat and epitome of Victorian foppery, proposes to his unsuspecting American cousin in this scene from Tom Taylor's popular play, "Our American Cousin," first performed in 1858. The role of Lord Dundreary was famously brought to life on stage by the talented Edward Askew Sothern, whose debonair appearance and impeccable whiskers, sideburns, and monocle are faithfully captured in this illustration from the 1860s. Lord Dundreary, a man of little intellect and even less discretion, is depicted here in the midst of proposing to his American cousin, a woman of considerable wit and intelligence. Despite his apparent cluelessness, Lord Dundreary's proposal is met with a surprised and amused reaction from the woman, who no doubt sees through his shallow attempts at courtship. The play, "Our American Cousin," was a huge success in both America and England, and Lord Dundreary's character became an iconic representation of the foolish Englishman in American popular culture. The scene of his proposal remains a beloved and enduring image from this classic work of Victorian theater, and serves as a reminder of the often humorous and complex dynamics of cross-cultural relationships in the 19th century.
