EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1903, captures the English writer and journalist Arthur George Morrison (1863-1945) in his personal study, adorned with an eclectic blend of Eastern art and Edwardian décor. Morrison, renowned for his realistic novels and stories about working-class life in London's East End, as well as his detective series featuring Martin Hewitt, is seen seated in front of a grand fireplace. The room, filled with an air of intellectual curiosity and creativity, boasts an impressive collection of Japanese prints and pictures, which were both a personal passion and an area of expertise for Morrison. Some of these treasured pieces were later sold, while others were bequeathed to the British Museum upon his death. The high beech-panelled walls, draped windows, and ornate furniture add to the sophisticated and inviting atmosphere of the room. This image offers a glimpse into the personal life of a prolific author, whose works continue to captivate readers over a century later.
