EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Blond Plantain, also known as Desert Indianwheat or Plantago ovata (Ispaghula), a common plant in the Plantain family. The botanical illustration was meticulously created by David Blair and beautifully rendered in lithography by Hanhart for the publication "Medicinal Plants" by Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen, published in London in 1880. Blond Plantain is native to the Mediterranean and desert regions of Africa, Asia, and Europe. This herbaceous perennial plant grows up to 30 centimeters tall and features narrow, lanceolate leaves and small, greenish-yellow flowers. The plant is named for its distinctive white hairs that cover the undersides of its leaves and the husk that surrounds its seeds. Blond Plantain has a long history of medicinal use, dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It was used to treat a variety of ailments, including diarrhea, dysentery, and constipation. The plant's mucilaginous seeds, known as psyllium, are still commonly used today as a bulk-forming laxative and as a dietary fiber supplement. The intricate details of the botanical illustration reveal the delicate structures of the plant's leaves, flowers, and seeds. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical collection or herbal study. This lithograph is a testament to the beauty and importance of the natural world and the scientific curiosity that drives us to explore and document it.
