EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, from Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" published in Florence in 1842, showcases a captivating collection of Chinese musical instruments. The image includes a variety of percussion and wind instruments, each with its unique character and intricate design. At the center, a large Zhu drum takes pride of place, its barrel-shaped body adorned with intricate carvings and decorated with a dragon motif. Nearby, a pair of Yu instruments, shaped like tigers, add an element of playfulness and mystery to the ensemble. The Paiban, a large gong with a distinctive bell-shaped body, sits proudly at the bottom left, ready to produce a resonant and powerful sound. To the right, a Free-reed bamboo Sheng, with its intricate array of bamboo pipes, is shown in the process of being played. The Sheng, an ancient Chinese instrument, produces melodic tones through the vibration of free reeds. Surrounding the Sheng are six smaller bamboo pipes, each with a unique shape and purpose. In the foreground, three flutes or Dizi, are depicted, their slender bodies curved and adorned with intricate decorations. The Dizi, a popular Chinese instrument, produces a clear and bright sound, making it a beloved addition to Chinese music. This engraving offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Chinese music, showcasing the beauty and diversity of its instruments. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the instruments to life, transporting us to another time and place.
