EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, showcases an intriguing collection of crab varieties. The engraving features five distinct crab species, each exhibiting unique characteristics that make them a delight for young naturalists. First, the Purple Land Crab (Gecarcinus ruricola) graces the left side of the illustration with its vibrant purple coloration and robust, land-dwelling form. The Hermit Crab (Paguristes eremita) is depicted in the middle, identified by its distinctive conical shell and retracted claws, which it uses to carry its home with it. Next to the hermit crab is the Sea Hermit Crab (Pagurus bernhardus), which differs from its land-dwelling cousin by its flattened, fan-like pincers and a more elongated body. The Sand Crab (Cancer arenarius) is shown on the right side, with its small size and camouflaged coloration, making it a master of blending in with its sandy environment. The engraving also includes another hermit crab species, Paguristes eremita, which is shown with its shell open, revealing its soft underbelly. This illustration not only provides an educational experience but also showcases the intricate details and artistic skill of the copperplate engraving technique. This print is a testament to the rich natural history knowledge that was passed down through generations and remains an essential resource for children's education even today.
