EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases a fragment of the Column of Marcus Aurelius, an ancient Roman monument located in Rome, Italy. The column, also known as the Column of Antoninus Pius, was erected around 161 AD to commemorate the victories of the Roman Empire under the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and his predecessor, Antoninus Pius. The intricately detailed illustration depicts a scene from one of the column's reliefs, with Roman legionnaires engaging in battle against extinct animals, including a bull and aurochs, as well as a stag and a deer. The scene takes place in a river, with the powerful animals attempting to cross the water while the soldiers defend their territory. The representation of the aurochs, a large and powerful wild ox that once roamed Europe, is particularly noteworthy as this species became extinct in the late Middle Ages. The aurochs was an important animal in Roman culture, with its image often used as a symbol of strength and power. This beautiful illustration is from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1844. The work aimed to document and preserve the historical fashion and cultural traditions of various civilizations throughout history. The high-quality engraving technique used in this print allows for a striking level of detail and accuracy, making it an invaluable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of ancient history and fashion.
