EDITORS COMMENTS
King Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), one of the most powerful monarchs in European history, is depicted in this hand-colored copperplate engraving from 1829, as he oversees the construction of the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain, begun in 1584. Surrounded by his courtiers, soldiers, magistrates, and masons, Philip stands confidently, dressed in the regal attire of the time, with a map or plan of the monument spread out before him. The imposing architectural project, which would later become the Royal Monastery and Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, was designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera, and was meant to serve as a monastery, royal palace, and mausoleum for Philip and his family. In the background, the construction site is bustling with activity, with workers laboring to build the grand edifice. Notable figures of the Spanish court, such as the Duke of Aragon, Cardinal Granada, and the Duke of Cardona, can be seen in attendance, paying homage to their king. The presence of Rodrigo Cid Rodezno, the Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, and Hernán Cortés, the famous conquistador, adds to the historical significance of the scene. The effigy of Philip II, which can be seen in the foreground, is likely a preliminary model or simulacro for his tomb, which was eventually completed and placed in the monument's basilica. This engraving, created by Giulio Ferrario and published in his Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and events of the late 16th century, as well as the grandeur and power of the Spanish monarchy during the reign of King Philip II.
