EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Lady Young, formerly known as Kathleen Bruce, is seen with her two sons: Peter Scott and Wayland Young. The image, taken in 1932, captures a moment of familial love and unity, as Lady Young gazes warmly at her children. Lady Young's first husband was the renowned polar explorer, Robert Falcon Scott. Tragically, Scott died on his return from the South Pole in 1912, leaving Lady Young a young widow. However, she found solace in her artistic pursuits and became a sculptor and sculptress under the name Lady Scott. Her first son, Peter Scott, inherited his mother's creative genes and went on to become a renowned artist and ornithologist. He is best known for his work on the conservation of the wildfowl and wetlands, and was a founder of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. Lady Young's second husband was Sir Hilton Young, who later became 2nd Baron Kennett. He was a writer and politician. Her second son, Wayland Young, also followed in his father's footsteps and became a writer and politician. The photograph is a poignant reminder of Lady Young's complex and fascinating life. Despite the challenges she faced, she remained a strong and inspiring figure, raising two successful sons and making significant contributions to the arts and conservation. The image captures a moment of happiness and love, as Lady Young cherishes her children and the unique family dynamic that she had created.
