EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Major-General John Maitland Salmond, a distinguished British military officer who rose to prominence in the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force during World War I. Born in January 1881, Salmond began his military career as a squadron commander and progressed to become a wing commander before assuming the role of General Officer Commanding the RAF on the Western Front towards the end of the war. Dressed in his full military uniform, Salmond exudes a sense of authority and determination. The photograph was taken in 1917, during a pivotal moment in the war when the outcome was still uncertain.
