EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de Valois-Saint-Remy, Duchesse de Joyeuse (1564-1625), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving by Edward Hargrave, published in The Ladies' Magazine and Museum of the Belles Lettres, Fine Arts, Drama, Fashions, etc. Vol. IX, Dobbs, London, 1836. Marguerite was the sister of Louise de Lorraine, who became Queen of France as the third wife of King Henry II of France. Born in Paris, Marguerite was the daughter of Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, and Catherine de' Medici. She was a member of the prominent Bourbon and Medici families, making her a significant figure in the European nobility. Marguerite married Anne de Joyeuse, Duke of Joyeuse, in 1581. The Joyeuse family was a powerful and influential one, with Anne serving as a trusted advisor to King Henry IV of France. Marguerite's marriage to Anne brought her even closer to the French court, where she became known for her beauty, intelligence, and wit. This engraving captures Marguerite's elegant and refined appearance. She is shown wearing a high-necked, long-sleeved gown, adorned with intricate lace and embroidery. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, and she wears a pearl necklace and earrings. The background features a richly decorated room, with a grand fireplace and ornate furnishings. Marguerite's life was marked by tragedy and intrigue. Her husband Anne was assassinated in 1587, and she later became involved in a love affair with the Duke of Mayenne, a rival of King Henry IV. Despite these challenges, Marguerite remained a respected and influential figure at the French court until her death in 1625.
