EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the charming facade of the Compasses Public House in Romford, Essex, during the 1910s. The image, taken in 1919, showcases the pub's intricate brickwork and ornate details, including the distinctive "Compasses and Barleycorn" sign that once hung proudly above the entrance. The Compasses, located at RM7 9RB, was a beloved local establishment that boasted a rich history. As the back of the print reveals, the pub had a trading record dating back to 1913, indicating its long-standing presence in the community. Unfortunately, by July 2018, the Compasses had been demolished, and its license was transferred to the Compasses Hornchurch. The pub was once a part of the Charrington and Company Limited, a well-known brewery that played a significant role in the British pub industry. Although the exact date of demolition is not mentioned on the print, it is believed to have occurred around 1933. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of community, camaraderie, and the simple pleasures of a visit to the local pub. The Compasses may no longer stand, but its memory lives on through images like this one, which serve as a testament to its history and the role it played in the lives of those who frequented it.
