EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Lucius Domitius Aurelianus Augustus, better known as Roman Emperor Aurelian (214-275 AD). The image is a copperplate engraving taken from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a 17th-century publication by Abraham Bogaert and Francois Salm. Aurelian's regal demeanor and piercing gaze convey the power and authority of the Roman Emperor during a time of great turmoil and transition. Born in Sirmium, in the province of Pannonia, Aurelian rose to power during the chaos of the third century AD, a period marked by political instability and military coups. He is best known for his military victories against the Germanic tribes, particularly the Goths and the Sassanids, and for his religious reforms, which included the establishment of the Temple of Sol Invictus in Rome. The portrait bears the influence of classical Roman art, with Aurelian depicted wearing the traditional imperial attire, including a laurel wreath and a toga. The engraving technique, popular during the 17th century, allowed for intricate detail and a high degree of realism, making this image an invaluable historical record of Aurelian's appearance and legacy. Comparing this portrait to other depictions of Roman Emperors, such as those of Tacitus, Marcus Claudius Marcellus, or Augustus, reveals the unique characteristics that set Aurelian apart. The copperplate engraving not only serves as a visual representation of the emperor but also as a tangible link to the past, offering insights into the political, social, and artistic climate of ancient Rome.
