EDITORS COMMENTS
Therese Cabarrus, Marquise de Fontenay, also known as Madame Tallien, was a prominent salonist and social figure during the French Revolution. This handcoloured lithograph, created in 1852 by Paul Lacroix for his publication "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a glimpse into the elegant and fashionable world of the French aristocracy during this tumultuous period. Born in 1773, Therese Cabarrus rose to prominence in the late 18th century as a hostess and patron of the arts. Her salon, located in the heart of Paris, became a gathering place for intellectuals, artists, and political figures, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Talleyrand. In this portrait, Therese is depicted in the fashion of 1798, a time when the French Revolution had brought about significant changes in fashion. Gone were the elaborate and ornate gowns of the Ancien Régime, replaced by simpler, more practical designs. Therese's gown, with its high waistline, simple bodice, and full skirt, reflects this new aesthetic. The lithograph also showcases Therese's striking features - her piercing gaze, delicate features, and elegant posture. Her hairstyle, with its loose curls and simple ornamentation, is also indicative of the changing trends of the time. Despite the political upheaval of the French Revolution, Therese and her salon continued to thrive. Her ability to adapt to the changing times and maintain her social influence made her a true icon of the era. This beautiful lithograph serves as a testament to her enduring legacy and the fascinating world of the French aristocracy during the Revolution.
