This photograph captures H.H. Ranjitsinhji Jamsaheb of Nawanagar, also known as Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, in the 1910s during his illustrious cricket career. Born in 1872 in the princely state of Nawanagar in Gujarat, India, Ranjitsinhji was not only a revered Maharaja but also an exceptional cricketer who represented England in Test matches. Before making his mark on the international stage, Ranjitsinhji excelled in first-class cricket for Cambridge University and Sussex County Cricket Club. His exceptional skills and dedication earned him the nickname 'The Sikh Sensation.' In 1896, he made his Test debut against Australia and went on to play in 21 Tests, scoring a total of 1,334 runs. Ranjitsinhji's contributions to cricket extended beyond his playing career. He was a passionate advocate for the sport and worked tirelessly to promote it in India. In 1912, he founded the Saurashtra cricket team, which later became a first-class team. In this photograph, Ranjitsinhji is seen in formal attire, exuding an air of regal confidence.
