Looking down on after deck and fighting tops of USS Nevada

WW1 - Looking down on after deck and fighting tops of USS Nevada - pictured before her 1927 refit. Lattice masts, or cage masts, are a type of observation mast common on major warships in the early 20th century. They are a type of hyperboloid structure, whose weight-saving design was first used by the Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov. They were used most prominently on American dreadnought battleships and armored cruisers of the World War I era. Date: circa 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the after deck and fighting tops of the USS Nevada (BB-36) during the height of World War I, around 1918. The USS Nevada was a formidable dreadnought battleship of the United States Navy, and this image showcases the intricate lattice masts, or cage masts, that dominated the ship's silhouette. Lattice masts were a groundbreaking innovation in naval engineering, first introduced by the Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov. Their weight-saving design, based on the hyperboloid structure, was adopted by major warships of the early 20th century, including American dreadnought battleships and armored cruisers. The lattice masts on the USS Nevada provided a stable platform for the ship's lookouts and gunners, who were responsible for spotting enemy ships and directing the battleship's powerful armament. The open-work design also allowed for increased ventilation and reduced wind resistance, enhancing the overall efficiency of the vessel. This photograph offers a unique perspective, looking down from above the deck, revealing the intricate details of the lattice masts and the busy scene of the fighting tops. Sailors can be seen engaged in various tasks, while others peer intently through binoculars, scanning the horizon for any signs of enemy activity. The USS Nevada was a symbol of American naval power during World War I, and this image offers a glimpse into the daily life and operations of this mighty battleship.
