EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting postcard captures a precious moment in the history of the British Monarchy, featuring the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI (1895-1952) and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900-2002), with their newborn daughter, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, later Queen Elizabeth II (1926-), in 1926. The image, taken shortly after the Princess's christening, showcases the young family in their formal attire, with the Duke and Duchess gazing lovingly at their daughter, who is swathed in a beautiful white christening gown. The Duke and Duchess of York's first child, Princess Elizabeth, was born on April 21, 1926, at York Cottage in Sandringham, Norfolk, England. Her birth marked the beginning of a new era, as she was the first child of the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and the heir to the British throne. The christening of Princess Elizabeth took place on May 22, 1926, at the Private Chapel in Buckingham Palace. The occasion was an official one, with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Gordon Lang, officiating the ceremony. The Princess wore a replica of the royal christening robe, which had been worn by twenty-five of her predecessors, including her own mother and her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. This postcard, taken by renowned photographer Grenville Collins, is a testament to the love and joy of a royal family, as they welcomed their future monarch into the world. The image captures the essence of the 1920s, with its formal elegance and traditional British charm, and serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the British Monarchy.
