This powerful print captures the harsh reality faced by tenants in Ireland during the 1870s. A new law granted tenants the right to a portion of their freehold, equivalent to seven years' rent, with twenty-one years' rent being the average value of a freehold in Ireland at that time. However, landlords found a loophole in the clause which allowed them to evict tenants who failed to pay their rent.
In this image, we see a landlord waiting for the perfect opportunity to exploit this clause. With non-payment of rent being a common occurrence in Ireland due to economic hardships and other factors, he would ruthlessly evict tenants as soon as they fell behind on payments.
