Mail arriving by boat in Calshot Harbour, Tristan de Cunha
Tristan de Cunha - Mail arriving by boat in Calshot Harbour. Tristan da Cunha, colloquially Tristan, is a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean which includes Gough Island. On 10 October 1961, the eruption of Queen Marys Peak forced the evacuation of the entire population of 264 individuals. Evacuees sailed to uninhabited Nightingale Island, where they were picked up by a Dutch passenger ship that took them via Cape Town to Britain. The islanders arrived in the UK to a big reception and were settled in an old Royal Air Force camp near Calshot, Hampshire - which subsequently gave its name to the harbour depicted here (following the islanders return). Date: circa late 1960s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Tristan da Cunha: Mail Arriving by Boat in Calshot Harbour, Hampshire, 1960s This evocative photograph captures the moment of mail arrival by boat in Calshot Harbour, Hampshire, during the 1960s. The scene depicts a crane lifting mail sacks from a small boat, as locals and onlookers gather around to receive their long-awaited correspondence. Tristan da Cunha, a remote group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, includes the famed Gough Island. In October 1961, the eruption of Queen Mary's Peak forced the evacuation of the entire population of 264 individuals. The evacuees sailed to uninhabited Nightingale Island, where they were later picked up by a Dutch passenger ship that transported them to Britain. The islanders arrived in the UK to a grand reception and were temporarily settled in an old Royal Air Force camp near Calshot, Hampshire, which subsequently gave its name to the harbour. The arrival of mail was a significant event for the Tristan da Cunha community, especially during their time in exile. The image encapsulates the anticipation and excitement of receiving letters and news from loved ones back home. This poignant moment serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Tristan da Cunha people during their time away from their native islands.
