EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving showcases two iconic Australian birds: the Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus) and the Eastern Ground Parrot (Pezoporus wallicus). The Palm Cockatoo, also known as the Goliath Cockatoo, is the largest of all cockatoos, with its distinctive red head and neck, black body, and a prominent, curved, orange-red beak. The Eastern Ground Parrot, on the other hand, is a medium-sized parrot with a predominantly green plumage, a yellow face, and a blue-grey bill. This illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Natural History: Ornithology" by Freycinet, Cuvier, and Desmoulins, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the talented painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. Pretre's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate textures and patterns of the birds' feathers, as well as the lifelike representation of their expressions and postures. This image offers a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating Australian species and the remarkable artistry of the time.
