EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print showcases a captivating scene from the Pergamon Altar, a grand monument built during the Hellenistic period in Pergamon, Asia Minor, under the order of Eumenes II Soter (170-158 BC). The altar, a masterpiece of ancient art, is now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany. The depicted scene on the altar's south frieze is known as the Gigantomachy, a mythological battle between the Olympian gods and the Giants. In this fragment, we witness the fierce struggle between Hecate, the three-faceted goddess of magic, crossroads, and the night, and the giant Klytios. Hecate, armed with a torch, a sword, and a lance, fiercely engages Klytios in combat. Her hunting dog, unseen in the image, is also reported to have played a role in the battle, fatally biting another giant in the neck. Next to Hecate, Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, is shown fighting against another giant, possibly Otos. Although Artemis is not clearly visible in the print, her presence is indicated by the bow and arrow she wields. The intricate details of the marble and limestone relief reveal the skill and artistry of the ancient artists who crafted this magnificent work during the 2nd century BC. The Pergamon Altar, a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of ancient civilizations, continues to captivate and inspire visitors with its intricate designs, mythological narratives, and historical significance.
