Pro Italia - Allies and Brothers-In-Arms for Justice

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and evocative image drawn by the renowned Italian artist Fortunino Matania in 1915 for an Italian celebration on Italian Day, held on 7th October of that year. The original drawing was later disposed of in the streets in the form of a souvenir pocket handkerchief by the Italian Red Cross Society. Fortunino Matania (1881-1963) was one of the most accomplished realistic illustrators and artists of his time, whose wartime work was immensely popular and appeared in nearly every major news magazine, both Allied, Neutral, and Central Powers alike. With tens of millions of readers being exposed to Matania's weekly illustrations, he played an important role in defining people's mental image of what Great War battlefield scenes and soldiers looked like. In this image, Matania depicts a group of Italian and Allied soldiers, standing together as brothers-in-arms, united in their pursuit of justice. The title "Pro Italia" emphasizes their shared commitment to the Italian cause. The image is a testament to the camaraderie and unity among the Allied forces during World War I. Matania's masterful use of light and shadow, as well as his attention to detail, bring the scene to life and make it a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war. The original drawing, now lost but preserved in this photographic print, is a valuable historical artifact that offers a glimpse into the past and the spirit of unity and determination that defined the Allied forces during World War I.
