This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.1, Plate 12, dates back to 1888. The illustration showcases three native New Zealand wrens: the Rifleman (Acanthisitta chloris), the Bush Wren (Zenicus longipes), and the Rock Wren (Xenicus gilviventris). The Rifleman, also known as the Titipounamu, is a small, brown, round-bodied bird with a distinctive long, curved bill. The female is depicted on the left side of the painting, with her olive-green back and chest, and her brown wings and tail. The male, on the right, is larger and has a more vibrant, olive-green plumage with a reddish-brown belly and a black stripe over the eye. The Bush Wren, or Matuhituhi, is a medium-sized, brown wren with a long, pointed tail and a distinctive white eyebrow. The female is depicted in the center of the painting, with her brown back and wings, and her olive-green chest and belly. The Rock Wren, or Piwauwau, is a small, brown wren with a white underbelly and a short, stubby tail. The bird on the right side of the painting, with its brown back and wings, and its white chest and belly, is most likely the Rock Wren. Keulemans' intricate and detailed watercolor painting captures the unique features and beauty of these three wren species, which are endemic to New Zealand and are part of the Acanthisittidae and Troglodytidae families. The Rifleman and Bush Wren are found in forested areas, while the Rock Wren inhabits alpine and subalpine regions. These birds are important components of New Zealand's biodiversity and are cherished by both scientific and conservation communities.
