EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the banks of the River Thames in 1873, captures the thrilling moment before the start of the historic Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race. The annual competition between these two prestigious universities began in 1829 and has since become a cherished tradition and a symbol of rivalry and camaraderie. In this image, the crews of both teams are seen making their final preparations before the race. The Oxford team, dressed in their dark blue blazers and boating caps, are positioned on the left side of the photograph, while the Cambridge team, clad in their light blue attire, are on the right. The tension in the air is palpable as the rowers adjust their oars, focus on the horizon, and exchange words of encouragement with their teammates. The boats, known as 'eights,' are elegantly adorned with the emblems of their respective universities. The coxswains, who steer the boats and provide strategic guidance, are poised at the stern, their eyes fixed on the starting line. The umpire, dressed in a distinctive red jacket, stands at the center, ready to signal the start of the race. Transporting the boats to the race site was a significant undertaking in those days. They were transported on specially designed trailers pulled by horses from their respective boathouses in London to Putney, where the race began. The journey took several days, and the boats were often rowed part of the way to keep them in racing condition. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a window into the history of this iconic event and the rich traditions of Oxford and Cambridge universities. The Boat Race continues to be a highly anticipated spectacle, attracting thousands of spectators and generating widespread media coverage each year.
