EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two exquisite pieces of Urartu civilization art: a pectoral and a gold medallion, both adorned with intricate reliefs, discovered in the ancient kingdom of Urartu, located in the Armenian highlands between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, during the 7th century BC. The pectoral, a type of chest decoration, depicts the image of the god Haldi, who is shown seated on a throne with his wife Arubani by his side. Haldi was the god of the sun, thunder, and fertility, while Arubani was the goddess of the earth and the protector of the city of Tushpa, now known as Toprakkale in modern-day Turkey. The gold medallion, referred to as a madaillon, features a seated goddess with a serene smile, whose identity remains uncertain. These precious artifacts are now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, providing a glimpse into the rich history and mythology of the ancient Urartian civilization that once flourished in the region. The intricate ironwork, ornamentation, and metalworking techniques used in the creation of these pieces are a testament to the advanced prehistoric art and craftsmanship of the Urartians.
