Two tired insurance office workers were on their way home from the City
Two tired insurance office workers were on their way home from the City. As they passed St. Pauls they looked across the cool, inviting fountain in a monumental garden. It was too much to resist, they climbed on to the wall, removed their shoes and socks and dangle their hot aching feet over the fountain and sat there contentedly indifferent to amazed passers-by. 26th July 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic print captured by Arthur Sidey, we are transported back to the bustling streets of London in the 1950s. Two exhausted insurance office workers, their faces etched with weariness, are seen making their way home from a long day in the City. As they pass St. Paul's Cathedral, a serene oasis catches their eye - a monumental garden adorned with a cool and inviting fountain. Unable to resist its allure, they climb onto the wall surrounding the fountain and kick off their shoes and socks. With relief evident on their faces, they dangle their hot and aching feet over the edge into the refreshing water. Oblivious to the astonished gazes of passers-by, these weary souls find solace in this impromptu act of relaxation. The date stamped on this photograph reads 26th July 1956 - an era when summers were scorching and finding respite from sweltering temperatures was essential for survival. This image captures not only a momentary escape from work but also reflects how people sought simple pleasures amidst busy city lives. Sidey's lens transports us back to an era where sunbathing by fountains was considered unconventional yet liberating. It serves as a reminder that even during challenging times or mundane routines, there is always room for unexpected moments of contentment if we allow ourselves to embrace them wholeheartedly.
