Capturing the Essence of Penryn - A Glimpse into Cornish Life in the 1900s

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to a bustling moment in history, as we find ourselves immersed in the vibrant streets of Penryn, Cornwall. The Commercial Road junction with Quay Hill serves as a stage for an intriguing scene that unfolds before our eyes. A crowd has gathered, their faces filled with curiosity and anticipation. Men and boys dominate the foreground, but amidst them stand four young girls who have managed to join this lively congregation. Behind them all stands a magnificent bridge, connecting communities and symbolizing progress. To the left of this gathering lies the impressive harbour office building adorned with numerous notices. One catches our attention - "Borough of Penryn. Penryn Harbour ordinances". It reminds us that even amidst everyday life, rules and regulations shape society. The large advertising notice on the road side proudly displays UGLOW PIANOS at affordable prices – two shillings for pianos and one shilling for organs – inviting passersby to indulge in musical delights from Falmouth & St Austell. As we explore further details within this snapshot frozen in time, we notice a top sail schooner gracefully docked alongside Quay Hill's edge – a testament to Cornwall's rich maritime heritage. Photographer Arthur William Jordan skillfully captures fifty-three individuals posing for his camera lens; each face tells its own story within this vivid tableau vivant.
