GPO Mail Bus Ruan Minor Cross Roads, Cornwall. 1903

The Great Western Railway Daimler General Post Office mail bus, AF 84, meeting the donkey shay carrying the Ruan Minor mail at Ruan Minor Cross Roads. The photograph is titled " Extremes Meet". Three men, including the driver, sit in the front. A man and young woman stand posing for the camera. They could be bus passengers as the young woman is carrying valise. However, the man could be a postal worker or Great Western Railway employee, as his coat has brass buttons as would be found on a uniform. Mr Tommy Dawe is holding the postal bag and the donkey reins. He has a badge with letters and number 4 on both sides of his jacket collar. It is not certain, but this could be GPO 4 which might be the local postmans uniform. The notice on the right reads: GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANYs ROAD MOTOR CARS WILL LEAVE THIS HALTE. (RUAN MINOR CROSS ROADS) The two columns below this read. Left side: FOR HOUSEL ROAD AND THE LIZARD. The right side is illegible, apart from the last entry of HELSTON STATION. The young womans clothing is an a good indication of ordinary female fashion at this time. Photographer: Arthur Philp

EDITORS COMMENTS
Extremes Meet: A Glimpse into the Past". This print captures a moment frozen in time at Ruan Minor Cross Roads, Cornwall in 1903. The focal point of the image is the magnificent Great Western Railway Daimler General Post Office mail bus, AF 84, as it encounters an unlikely companion - a donkey shay carrying the Ruan Minor mail. Aptly titled "Extremes Meet" this photograph showcases the convergence of traditional and modern modes of transportation. Intriguing details emerge upon closer inspection. Three men occupy the front seats of the bus, including its driver. Standing beside them are a man and a young woman who strike poses for the camera. While it remains uncertain whether they are passengers or employees, their attire provides some clues. The young woman carries a valise, suggesting she may be traveling on board. Meanwhile, brass buttons adorning the man's coat hint at his affiliation with either postal services or Great Western Railway. Mr Tommy Dawe takes center stage as he holds both the postal bag and reins of the donkey shay. His jacket collar bears a badge displaying letters and number 4 – possibly indicating his role as part of GPO 4 or local postman uniform. A notice on display announces that "GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY's ROAD MOTOR CARS WILL LEAVE THIS HALTE". Additional columns indicate destinations such as Housel Road and The Lizard on one side while Helston Station appears to be listed on another. The young woman's clothing offers valuable insights into ordinary female fashion during this era when societal norms were rapidly evolving. Preserved by photographer Arthur Philp (not associated with any company), this remarkable print from Royal Cornwall Museum transports us back to an enchanting period where extremes truly met.
