Back Quay and The Green, Truro, Cornwall. 1910-1920

A view from just down river from Lemon Quay, looking up river towards Lemon Bridge (just out of view) and Back Quay. The trees on the right hand side mark The Green. At high tide a sailing barge discharges some type of bulk cargo by wheelbarrow across a precariously rigged gang plank. The sailing barge is probably anchored in the centre of the River Kenwyn to give more time on a falling tide to discharge the cargo. A ketch type vessel is tied alongside on the right with what looks like a washing line rigged on deck to dry clothing. The completed cathedral stands in the distance. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 20th century, capturing a picturesque scene of Back Quay and The Green in Truro, Cornwall. The view from just down river from Lemon Quay offers a glimpse into the bustling city life of that era. In this snapshot, we see the tranquil River Kenwyn flowing gently towards Lemon Bridge, which is unfortunately just out of view. On the right-hand side, a row of trees beautifully marks The Green area. At high tide, an intriguing sight unfolds before our eyes as a sailing barge carefully unloads some type of bulk cargo using wheelbarrows across a precariously rigged gang plank. This method allows for more time on the falling tide to complete the discharge process. Adjacent to this fascinating spectacle lies another vessel—a ketch type ship—tied alongside with what appears to be a washing line rigged on deck for drying clothing. It's remarkable how these small details offer insights into daily life during that period. As we gaze further into the distance, our eyes are drawn to the magnificent completed cathedral standing tall against the sky—an awe-inspiring symbol of faith and architectural grandeur. This extraordinary photograph was captured by an unknown photographer whose lens has preserved this moment in history forever. It serves as both a testament to Truro's rich maritime heritage and an invitation for us to explore its past through visual storytelling.
