EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the Cornwall County Fisheries Exhibition held in Truro, Cornwall, during July and August of 1893. The image showcases the Victoria, Australia exhibit at the event, featuring an impressive collection of drawings depicting fish found in Victorian waters. These remarkable artworks were graciously forwarded by the Government of Victoria, showcasing their commitment to international fisheries. In this snapshot frozen in time, we also catch a glimpse of another fascinating display lent by the Dominion of Canada – a collection of fish that undoubtedly added diversity and intrigue to this grand exhibition. The venue for this spectacle was a field situated at the top of Lemon Street, where visitors from near and far flocked to witness these marvels for an entire month. The photograph not only captures the interior ambiance but also offers a window into history with its mention of an upcoming public auction on September 20th, 1893. This auction would see various materials used in constructing these exhibition buildings find new homes within Truro's community. As we delve into this historical documentation through glass lantern slides like number four in our series, it is important to appreciate how such events brought together different cultures and nations through shared interests like fishing and commerce. This artwork-filled corner serves as a testament to both Victorian ingenuity and Cornish appreciation for artistry within their beloved industry.
