A view of Truro, Cornwall from Poltisco. Around 1890

A view of the city from Poltisco showing the cathedral under construction and without the central tower. Both of Isambard Kingdom Brunels original stone and timber viaducts can be seen in the photograph, Carvedras on the left and Moresk (also known as Truro) on the right. Carvedras Viaduct was replaced by an all stone structure in 1902 and Moresk, or Truro, Viaduct was replaced by an all stone structure in 1904. Photographer: Gibson & Son

Bowler City River Town View Viaduct Yard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the late 19th century, offering a mesmerizing view of Truro, Cornwall from Poltisco. The year is estimated to be around 1890, and the cityscape depicted in this image tells an intriguing story of construction and progress. In the foreground stands a man wearing a distinguished bowler hat, perhaps overseeing the bustling timber yard nearby. His presence adds a human touch to this otherwise panoramic scene. As we gaze further into the photograph, our eyes are drawn towards Truro Cathedral under construction. However, something seems amiss - there is no central tower! This unique perspective allows us to witness an early stage in the cathedral's development. But it's not just the cathedral that captures our attention; two remarkable viaducts dominate the landscape. On the left side stands Carvedras Viaduct with its stone and timber structure intact. To its right lies Moresk (also known as Truro) Viaduct, equally impressive with its own stone and timber design. Little did anyone know at that time that these viaducts would eventually undergo significant transformations. Carvedras Viaduct was replaced by an all-stone structure in 1902 while Moresk Viaduct followed suit in 1904. Thanks to Gibson & Son, who skillfully captured this general view of Truro from Poltisco over a century ago, we can now appreciate both historical landmarks and witness how they evolved over time.
