EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in the golden era of Edwardian Cornwall, this print showcases the majestic schooner Atlas resting gracefully on the sandy shores of St Ives harbour in 1903. As the sun casts its warm glow upon the scene, a group of children have ingeniously transformed the anchor cable into their personal seats, basking in the joyous embrace of low tide. A charming detail catches our eye as we explore further - a small boat named Irene quietly nestled beside Atlas, her name elegantly painted on her bow. The presence of these two vessels evokes a sense of camaraderie amongst seafaring souls navigating these treacherous waters. The Atlas herself carries with her a rich history. Born in Wexford, Ireland back in 1840, she found new ownership under John Tregarthen Short - an esteemed coal merchant from St Ives - by 1902. However, fate had other plans for this grand dame; she met her demise and was dismantled just ten years later in 1912. Through Herbert Hughes' lens, we are transported to an era where ketches with top sail rigs dotted our coastal landscapes and life revolved around ships and boats that braved unpredictable seas. This photograph is not merely an image frozen in time but rather a portal to relive Cornish maritime heritage at its finest.
