Alveolar cell, TEM

Alveolar cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a type II alveolar cell. This cell is found in the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs. At upper centre is the cell nucleus (brown), which contains the cells genetic information. In the cells cytoplasm (pink) are mitochondria (brown), which provide the cell with energy, and lamellar bodies (purple), which contain surfactant. The lamellar bodies are secreted onto the epithelial cell surface of the alveoli where the surfactant decreases the surface tension, allowing the alveoli to inflate during inspiration and preventing their collapse during expiration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an alveolar cell, a vital component of our respiratory system. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this false-colored image reveals the inner workings of a type II alveolar cell found within the air sacs of our lungs. At the upper center, we can observe the cell nucleus in brown, housing all the genetic information necessary for cellular function. Surrounding it is the pink cytoplasm containing numerous mitochondria depicted in brown. These tiny powerhouses supply energy to ensure proper functioning and survival of the cell. Additionally, scattered throughout the cytoplasm are purple lamellar bodies – secretory granules that play a crucial role in maintaining lung health. Once released onto the surface of epithelial cells lining the alveoli, these surfactant-filled vesicles reduce surface tension during inhalation and prevent collapse during exhalation. This mechanism allows for efficient gaseous exchange within our lungs. The vibrant colors used in this micrograph enhance its visual appeal while highlighting different components within this microscopic world. With its detailed depiction and scientific accuracy, this print from Science Photo Library provides us with a glimpse into one of nature's remarkable creations – reminding us just how intricately designed our own bodies truly are.
