Blue tang shoal

Blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) shoaling over a coral reef. This fish, also known as the blue surgeonfish, inhabits the tropical and subtropical coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean, from as far north as New York, USA, to Brazil. It is also found around mid-Atlantic islands such as Ascension. It feeds almost exclusively on algae and can reach a length of nearly 40 centimetres. It gets the name surgeonfish due to the extremely sharp spines on the base of its tail, which can inflict painful injuries on people who handle the fish. Photographed off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Blue tang shoal, also known as the blue surgeonfish, gracefully swimming over a vibrant coral reef. The Blue tang is a tropical fish species found in the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from New York to Brazil and even around mid-Atlantic islands like Ascension. With its striking blue coloration and sleek body shape, this fish stands out among its marine counterparts. Growing up to 40 centimeters long, it predominantly feeds on algae that thrive in these coastal waters. However, one must exercise caution when handling this fascinating creature due to the presence of sharp spines at the base of its tail. These spines have earned it the name "surgeonfish" as they can inflict painful injuries upon contact with humans. Photographed off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles within the Caribbean Sea, this image captures nature's underwater marvels at their finest. The sight of multiple Blue tangs coming together in a schooling behavior highlights their social nature and emphasizes their importance within marine ecosystems. This photograph not only serves as an awe-inspiring visual display but also provides valuable insights into zoology and marine biology. It reminds us of our planet's diverse fauna and encourages us to appreciate and protect these delicate underwater habitats for future generations to enjoy.
