Candles under red light

Candles under red light. Image 1 of 2. Colour is the result of an object reflecting and absorbing different parts of the visible (light) spectrum. Only reflected light contributes to an objects colour. When red light is present, objects that reflect this wavelength of light will appear red. This is the case for the red and white candles. However, the green and blue candles absorb the red light and appear black. See A200/384 for candles under white light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a quartet of candles illuminated under a mesmerizing red light. The vibrant color that we perceive is the result of these objects reflecting and absorbing different parts of the visible spectrum. In this case, only the reflected red light contributes to the striking hue exhibited by the red and white candles. As they reflect this specific wavelength, their appearance is beautifully transformed into shades of crimson. However, an intriguing contrast emerges as we observe the green and blue candles in this image. These candles absorb the red light instead of reflecting it, causing them to appear black against the vivid backdrop. This phenomenon exemplifies how objects interact with light in fascinating ways, demonstrating principles from both physics and optics. The flames atop each candle add an ethereal touch to this visual spectacle. Their dancing movements further emphasize the play between reflection, absorption, and color perception within this composition. As we delve into electromagnetic wavelengths and absorption properties inherent in physical matter, we are reminded once again of nature's intricate beauty captured through scientific exploration. Science Photo Library has masterfully encapsulated these concepts in a single frame – inviting us to appreciate not only its aesthetic appeal but also its educational value for those curious about colors, flames, optics, or even just seeking inspiration from our world's wonders.
