Celestial soldiers, 16th century

Celestial soldiers, 16th-century artwork. This artwork is from Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon (1557) by the German author Conrad Lycosthenes (1518-1561). In this work, Lycosthenes linked heavenly objects and apparitions, such as comets and aurorae, to events on Earth. In most cases, modern science can now explain such phenomena, but in earlier times it was common to ascribe such events to gods or other deities battling in the heavens. This artwork was republished in the 13th volume (first period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century artwork, titled "Celestial Soldiers" takes us back in time to an era when heavenly phenomena were believed to be connected to events on Earth. Created by the German author Conrad Lycosthenes and featured in his renowned work Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon (1557), this illustration showcases a fascinating link between celestial objects and earthly occurrences. During this period, people attributed comets, aurorae, and other apparitions to gods or deities engaged in battles high above the clouds. This stunning monochrome print transports us into that world of ancient beliefs and vivid imagination. Originally published in La Science Illustree's 13th volume from 1894, this artwork has found its way into the annals of popular science history. It serves as a testament to humanity's quest for understanding the mysteries of our universe throughout different periods and cultures. The image features European soldiers riding gallantly on horseback amidst a cloudy sky backdrop. Their appearance is reminiscent of the legendary Horsemen of the Apocalypse, evoking notions of doom and portents. The soldiers' presence suggests an ongoing war in heaven that impacts life on Earth. As we admire this historical masterpiece captured by Science Photo Library, let it remind us how far scientific knowledge has come since then. While modern science can now explain many celestial phenomena once ascribed to divine intervention, these artworks serve as valuable relics showcasing our ancestors' rich cultural heritage intertwined with their pursuit for answers about our existence.
