Chicken body louse eggs, SEM
Chicken body louse eggs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the eggs of a chicken body louse (family Menoponidae) attached to the base of a chicken tail feather. These eggs are unusual in that they are very highly ornamented. Each egg consists of a stalked cap (operculum, brown), through which the larvae emerge, surrounded by rings of scale like filaments (yellow). The chicken body louse is the most common and most destructive louse found on chickens. Magnification: x15 when printed 10 centimetres wide
