Davy visited Vesuvius several times, in 1814 and again in 1819 and 1820. He carried out several experiments during his 1819 and 1820 visit. In 1828, the year before his death, he read his paper On the Phenomena of Volcanoes to the Royal Society, describing some of these experiments.
